One NBA scout told LA Lakers reporter Jovan Buha what he saw in Dalton Knecht, who is coming off a strange rookie season.

Dalton Knecht’s rookie season with the Los Angeles Lakers was a tale of two halves. The #17 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft didn’t exactly light the world on fire.

Knecht was the Lakers’ breakout star early in the season, with his form peaking in December with a 37-point performance.

However, as the season wore on, Knecht started to struggle, having several inefficient offensive nights, combined with a lackluster effort on defense.

Knecht’s woes continued into the Summer League, and he didn’t really show any signs of improvement during the Lakers’ preseason. But how do scouts across the NBA feel about him?

NBA scouts worried Dalton Knecht has not progressed enough after rookie season

LA Lakers reporter Jovan Buha spoke on his podcast about his experience at the Lakers’ preseason game against the Dallas Mavericks in Las Vegas.

He told the story of speaking to an NBA scout, who expressed concern about the lack of progression we’ve seen from Dalton Knecht after his disappointing rookie year.

“I was talking to a scout last night at the Lakers–Mavericks preseason game, a scout for another team, and he was just talking about Dalton’s struggles.

“From a decision-processing standpoint, there’s not been a lot of progress there, and that continues to be the area of his game where he’s just not seeing the right thing to do on either side of the ball.

“Of course, he’s more evolved on the offensive side, but this person was expressing a lot of skepticism.

“That’s just one person’s opinion, but I’ve said this before: anytime I have an outside conversation about Dalton with someone outside of the Lakers, it tends to be relatively negative or pessimistic.”

LA Lakers might have to consider trading Dalton Knecht at low cost

There was some hope that Dalton Knecht would be able to turn things around during the LA Lakers’ preseason games, given Knecht’s strong preseason with the Lakers.

However, Knecht failed to make an impression and only showed that his struggles were not just exclusive to last season.

Unless Knecht is miraculously able to recover his initial form in the early stretch of the NBA season, the LA Lakers might have to accept moving on from him in the months to come.

At this point, Knecht is a negative trade asset, and they will have to use him as cap filler for any potential trade they make before the deadline.
