Although the All-Star weekend wrapped up on Sunday, the party continued in Indiana. On Thursday, before the Indiana Pacers' game against the Memphis Grizzlies, the team's X (formerly known as Twitter) social media team celebrated a role player's birthday after the All-Star break.
Despite playing only 37 games over the previous three seasons, James Johnson holds a roster spot for the Pacers. According to Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle before the Feb. 6 trade deadline, Johnson "isn't going anywhere,' and such a prediction came true.
He is a seemingly untouchable player, astonishingly not due to his black belt experience. As a focal role player, likely for his 16 years of experience as an NBA journeyman and morale-building ability as a veteran, the Pacers continue to reward Johnson for his commitment to the franchise.
Johnson turned 38 on Thursday, reminding the NBA front offices it's acceptable for a winning team to have a roster spot for a veteran voice in the locker room and on the bench, similar to what the Miami Heat did for Udonis Haslem and vice versa for eight consecutive seasons after the reserve big exited his prime.
While it's unlikely Johnson will remain with the Pacers well into his 40s, Carlisls's continued glowing praise indicates he has a place on his bench for however long he has the ability.
“He [Johnson] just has great wisdom in the locker room, Carlisle said. He has great respect from all the guys."
Given Carlisle's respect for Johnson and, more importantly, the players in the Pacers' locker room, perhaps the 16-year veteran has a future in coaching.
For now, though, Johnson can focus on his birthday and the following celebration.
While 38 candles is a lot for a birthday cake, perhaps the Pacers can gift Johnson some playing time.
