The NBA season is a marathon, not a sprint. With two games to go, it’s nearly time for the Dallas Mavericks to collapse in an exhausted heap after crossing the finish line. For teams with nothing left to lose, these final games are often the most enjoyable. Bench players and G-Leaguers put up crazy numbers and become cult figures for a week. With games against the Spurs and the Bulls to close out the depressing 2025-26 season, let’s explore what to expect from the Mavericks.
With the Spurs wedged firmly into the second seed in the west behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, expect to see the backup brigade face off against the Mavs. The spanner in the works, however, is that Victor Wembanyama needs to log a 20-minute game for the Spurs in the next two games to put him in contention for individual awards. It’s a perfect opportunity to have a little bit of fun against a local rival. Guard John Poulakidis has the chance to thrive here. With the Spurs looking to rest their bombastic guard trio before the playoffs, Poulakidis can run rampant against fellow ‘do-or-die’ guys. It should be a fun watch, as most games involving the Spurs tend to be. In the near future, these Mavericks vs Spurs games will likely have much higher stakes. Enjoy this one before future viewing is consumed by nail-biting.
This game has to be a statement of sorts. The Bulls faithful are about as depressed at this point as Mavericks fans are. Neither will want to leave the season on a complete down note. Jason Kidd should look for an exciting, if not dominant, showing from the players. It would be reasonable to see the veterans in street clothes for this outing. You can expect to see Cooper Flagg, if fit, putting on one last dominant rookie display. He is about to wrap up one of the most incredible rookie seasons in recent history. This matchup will likely see the end of more than one tenure with the Mavs. Khris Middleton, Brandon Williams, Marvin Bagley III, and Dwight Powell are all on expiring deals, with the latter rumored to retire earlier in the season.
We all know that there is nothing left to play for other than draft lottery odds. In the best-case scenario, the Mavericks can move one spot higher in the lottery. The extra 0.1% chance at the first overall pick is negligible. The organization will likely treat this last stretch of the season as a promise to fans. Letting the kids put on a show for a weary crowd, ensuring everyone knows the franchise’s potential with Flagg at its helm. Leaving a good taste in supporters’ mouths is essential to creating a rally around the contention next season. Every poor showing will add another layer of scrutiny to each decision the front office makes this offseason. In an offseason that will require risky moves and unwarranted confidence in transactions, the Dallas Mavericks need their fans on board.
