The Dallas Mavericks have made significant changes so far this year. D’Angelo Russell is one of the Mavericks’ namesake changes. Russell, 29, is a point guard who may be the perfect fuel for the Mavericks’ machine. Here is what to expect from him during the 2025-26 NBA season.

What To Expect From D’Angelo Russell

Russell is a 29-year-old, 6-foot-3 point guard who has been a consistent scorer in his NBA career since 2015. He has averaged 5+ assists per game in each of the last eight seasons. However, Russell faced a challenging year during the 2024-25 NBA season. He averaged 12.6 points and 5.1 assists per game, while playing 58 games split between the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. His three-point percentage plummeted to a career-low 31.4%, an oddity for him.

D’Angelo Russell’s Career

His career appears as a journeyman’s path due to the short-lived stints with several teams. However, the appearance on paper doesn’t highlight his 38% from downtown in the four seasons before last. He previously played for the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Golden State Warriors. He played two stints for the Nets and Lakers. The Lakers selected him with the second overall pick at the 2015 NBA Draft. He played college basketball at Ohio State from the 2014-15 NCAA season.

Final Thoughts

Russell reportedly fit the Dallas Mavericks’ job description of a point guard in free agency. He is a veteran who has played alongside superstars in the past and managed to sign a reasonable contract. The Mavericks appear to bank on his chances of having a bounce-back season . He can be more than a stopgap until Kyrie Irving returns to the court. There is no guarantee Irving, 33, will return in January 2026. Until then, his skill and leadership can help him bond with Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, and Cooper Flagg.
