All my San Antonio Spurs friends from around the NBA keep asking the same thing: What are the Spurs going to do?
Short answer: I don’t know. Long answer: neither does anyone else.
The only thing we know for sure is San Antonio owns the No. 2 pick in the draft. That means they’ve got options. A lot of them. And as usual, the Spurs aren’t saying much.
The most likely scenario? They take Rutgers guard Dylan Harper. Pair him with De’Aaron Fox and Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and see how it goes. That would give them a dynamic backcourt trio with some real bite.
Could they flip Fox already? Probably not. Doesn’t feel like something this front office would do, especially after just landing him. Castle? Also unlikely. The Spurs have never been in the habit of bailing on a guy who just won Rookie of the Year.
They could trade the pick. They could trade down. They could shock us all and take someone else entirely at No. 2. It’s all on the table.
Now, if you want to get wild, there’s always the Giannis Antetokounmpo fantasy. Move the pick in a mega-deal, go all in, fast-track the Victor Wembanyama era. Fun to think about, but let’s be real. That’s not how the Spurs operate.
This is still a franchise that believes in slow builds and smart moves. But they also know it’s not every year you get to pick this high. Something big is coming. Just don’t expect anyone in San Antonio to tip their hand.
