Nick Nurse is currently in preparation for Year 3 with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The modern era hasn’t been kind to the Philadelphia 76ers. They have struggled in the postseason despite having Joel Embiid as the cornerstone star of the franchise.
While Embiid has battled injuries, one can also blame the 76ers’ inability to stick with a head coach for their struggles.
Right now, Nick Nurse is shouldering the burden of coaching the 76ers. Speaking of which, let’s take a look at Nurse’s coaching history in the NBA.
Nurse began his NBA coaching journey as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors during the 2013-14 NBA season.
He spent five seasons in Toronto in the same capacity before finally earning a promotion to the team’s head coach ahead of the 2018-19 season.
The move turned out to be a masterstroke on the Raptors front office’s part as Nurse led the team to their first-ever NBA Championship during his rookie year.
Nurse also won the NBA’s Coach of the Year for his phenomenal debut season as the Raptors’ head coach. But Nurse’s journey came to an end in 2023 after leading the Raptors to a 227-163 record over five seasons.
However, before the start of the new season, Nurse landed the 76ers’ head coaching job. In his first season, the 76ers went 47-35 during the regular season, only to suffer a 4-2 defeat in the opening round of the postseason.
From the 2017-18 to 2023-24 seasons, the 76ers never missed the postseason, but they also never crossed the second-round hurdle in the Eastern Conference.
However, that streak was shattered during the 2024-25 season as Philly finished the campaign with an underwhelming 24-58 record.
Ahead of the upcoming season, Nurse will have to ensure that his team enters the campaign with high morale.
It will also be interesting to see how Nurse uses VJ Edgecombe, the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, along with the trio of Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey.
