Why 76ers are bringing back disgruntled James Harden

Following an offseason of uncertainty, point guard James Harden will reportedly stay a member of the Philadelphia 76ers after the team broke off trade talks on Saturday.

According to John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia, the Sixers didn't want to move the 10-time All-Star and possibly "compromise" their chances at fielding a title-contending team, adding that the franchise wanted the veteran back.

While nothing is certain yet, the Sixers' position shouldn't come as a surprise. In July, reports indicated Philly would "love" to keep Harden around. Meanwhile, the Sixers put on a full-court press to lure Harden back. Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey revealed his intentions to try to "convince" Harden to return. And reigning MVP Joel Embiid said he hoped the three-time scoring champ would change his mind.

On June 29, Harden opted into his player option for 2023-24 with the understanding that the Sixers would trade him before the season. There may not have been much of a market for a 33-year-old point guard like Harden, especially with his penchant for jumping ship when things get rough. However, if requesting a trade out in the open wasn't enough to kill the Sixers' leverage, Harden killed it dead after not being bashful about having a preferred destination in the Los Angeles Clippers.

Per ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Sixers had a dialog with the Clippers regarding Harden, but "no traction on a deal materialized."

The Sixers' decision to keep Harden doesn't mean the saga is over. Philly could potentially stop Harden from hitting free agency next offseason if he doesn't report to camp, meaning he'll be there regardless. Although, after not getting his way, there's no telling what Harden the Sixers will be getting.
