The Minnesota Timberwolves hold the 17th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. While the team is involved in many trade rumors, this pick could still be impactful for the team, considering their history of maximizing their picks.
With the team lacking depth in the frontcourt, the Timberwolves could use a promising player who could make an impact. A player who fits the bill is Georgetown freshman Thomas Sorber.
Over the past two years competing at the top of the Western Conference, the Timberwolves have been superb with their big men. Rudy Gobert, Naz Reid, Julius Randle, and, previously, Karl-Anthony Towns were awesome for Chris Finch.
However, the team lacks options beyond the current group. Apart from a dynamic point guard, this is the position they need to improve on. A good way to solve that is through the draft and picking Thomas Sorber.
The Timberwolves can afford to pick a center they must develop. Sorber is still a raw prospect, but he has the physical traits that could make him a difference-maker at center.
He stands at 6'9.25" without shoes with a fantastic 7'6" wingspan. That makes him a good prospect to have because he has all the tools to become a strong defender.
With Sorber’s fit to Minnesota at 17, I think it’s important to highlight a quote Jonah mentioned:

“Sorber doesn’t need to be in deep drop coverage…[Sorber] will be more productive if he finds better ways to position himself in those in-between spots”

At Georgetown, he played 24 games while averaging 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and two blocks per game. That is an impressive stat line because he shows promise as an offensive player, but his defense is what stands out.
He is the perfect understudy to Rudy Gobert. While Gobert might be involved in a blockbuster trade, getting a player like Sorber is still quite important because an athletic and defensive-minded center can always contribute.
With all his physical traits, the Timberwolves are an awesome place for him to play. Chris Finch is a solid coach who knows how to develop his players. At the same time, the Timberwolves have a strong team culture.
With Anthony Edwards as the team's superstar and leader, they are a fun-loving bunch. They love to uplift each other as they continue to perform at the highest level.
Georgetown’s Thomas Sorber’s official measurements from the NBA Draft Combine:
— Jonathan Givony (@DraftExpress) May 12, 2025
6’9 ¼ barefoot, 262.8 lbs with a 7’6” wingspan and 9’1"standing reach
Impressive measurements for the freshman center with that crazy wingspan that will be one of the longest in the NBA. pic.twitter.com/xy7PBlMehB
Sorber will take some time to develop, but he can be a difference-maker for the Timberwolves if he delivers on his potential. He is a raw prospect, but he has tremendous defensive potential in the paint and on switches.
Succeeding in the modern NBA requires having good depth, and Sorber is a fantastic player who can be a role player but could also grow into becoming a defensive cornerstone.
The Timberwolves should not regret picking Sorber with the 17th pick. He has all the tools to be a long-term NBA player, and the Timberwolves are a good spot for him.
