Matisse Thybulle is beginning a new chapter with the Los Angeles Lakers, and the veteran wing found a creative way to bring pieces of his previous NBA stops with him through his new jersey number.
In a recent video shared by the Lakers’ social media team, Thybulle explained why he chose to wear No. 26 after joining Los Angeles. The number combines the two numbers he previously wore during his NBA career.
“It’ll definitely take some time getting used to. I chose 26 because my two numbers that I’ve worn in the NBA are 22 and 4. That adds up to 26,” Thybulle said with a laugh.
Thybulle wore No. 22 during his tenure with the Philadelphia 76ers before switching to No. 4 with the Portland Trail Blazers. Rather than choosing one of his former numbers for his Lakers tenure, the 29-year-old opted to combine them while embracing a fresh start in Los Angeles.

Thybulle said the significance goes beyond simply adding his former jersey numbers together.
“So yeah, I chose this number because I just feel like it’s a new chapter, a fresh start, but still knowing what got me here. It’s a number that I’ve never worn. A color I’ve never worn. A whole lot of newness. I think it’s a special opportunity to play for such a historic franchise and an accomplished franchise – to contribute in an arena and wearing a jersey that so many great players have worn is something I’m really excited about.”
Thybulle joins a significantly revamped Lakers roster entering the 2026-27 season. Los Angeles has also added Collin Sexton, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Walker Kessler as it begins its first season following LeBron James’ departure . The Lakers also remain in pursuit of free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Los Angeles will get its first regular-season look at the new group when it opens the 2026-27 campaign against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT on ESPN.
