Watson’s Departure Left a Hole Denver Couldn’t Fully Fill

Watson emerged as a key two-way piece in 2025-26. In 54 games (40 starts), the 6-foot-8 wing averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.1 blocks while shooting 49.1 percent from the field and 41.1 percent from three. His athleticism and defensive versatility filled a clear need alongside Jokić and Jamal Murray.  

Denver ultimately signed-and-traded the restricted free agent to Cleveland as part of a multi-team deal. The Nuggets received an unprotected 2031 first-round pick from the Cavaliers and a 2032 second-round selection. No rotation player of note came back the other way. Cap and luxury-tax realities, including second-apron restrictions, heavily influenced the decision.   Days later, Denver signed veteran scorer DeMar DeRozan to a one-year, $3.9 million deal to bolster bench scoring and creation. Jokić Has Earned the Right to Be Taken at His Word

After the Nuggets’ first-round loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jokić did not sugarcoat the situation. He acknowledged the team was “far away” from true title contention while still reaffirming his desire to remain a Nugget long-term. That same straightforward style makes his more recent “okay” comment harder to dismiss as pure spin or public-relations damage control.   The 2025-26 season was plagued by injuries. Jokić missed time with a hyperextended left knee. Gordon dealt with hamstring and calf issues. Braun missed large stretches with an ankle sprain, Johnson was limited by a knee bone bruise, and Watson’s hamstring injury kept him out of the playoffs entirely. Despite all of that, Denver still finished with 54 wins and the No. 3 seed.   Jokić averaged another near triple-double season, leading the league in both rebounds and assists. When healthy, the Jokić-Murray two-man game remains one of the most difficult actions in basketball to defend, and Gordon continues to provide the two-way versatility and physicality that complements the star center.  

“Okay” may simply mean competitive and playoff-relevant rather than championship favorite. An honest reading of a roster operating under tight financial constraints.   The unprotected 2031 first-round pick acquired in the Watson deal gives Denver future asset flexibility that could be used to address depth or athleticism later. Jokić has repeatedly shown an ability to elevate the players around him, turning role players into productive pieces through his vision and decision-making.   His current priority remains practical: finishing national-team duties with Serbia before shifting full attention to training camp and the upcoming season. That grounded mindset has served him and the franchise for years.

The Roster Holes Are Real and Growing

Watson represented developing two-way athleticism and defensive versatility in the heart of Jokić’s prime years. Losing that production without a comparable replacement thins the wing rotation at a time when the Western Conference is loaded with physical, switchable teams.   DeRozan helps on offense as a mid-range creator and secondary playmaker.  However, at 37, he is a fundamentally different type of player—more isolation scorer than the athletic, switchable defender Watson provided.  

The broader picture raises sharper questions. Injuries plagued the 2025-2026 season and repeatedly disrupted continuity. Multiple starters missed significant stretches, forcing the team to lean on younger or less proven pieces for long periods. Those absences contributed to an uneven regular season and left the roster less prepared for playoff physicality.   The No. 6-seeded Timberwolves eliminated the Nuggets 4-2 in the first round. This was even after Minnesota lost Anthony Edwards and other key contributors during the series. It marked the first time since 2022 that Denver failed to advance past the first round, exposing lingering issues with rebounding, defensive consistency, and supporting scoring.

The Cap, the Coach, and an Aging Core Add Uncertainty

Head coach David Adelman’s situation adds another layer of uncertainty.   Denver fired Michael Malone late in the 2024-25 season, and Adelman stepped in as interim and guided the team to the second round. He earned the full-time job, but his first full season as head coach ended in that early exit.  

While the front office has publicly backed him, the jump from successful assistant/interim to sustained head-coaching success is never guaranteed. The first-round loss invited scrutiny about scheme, adjustments, and in-game management against a physical opponent.   Looking ahead, the salary-cap picture is bleak for an aging core. The Nuggets are already operating deep into second-apron territory with massive contracts for Jokić, Murray, Gordon, Braun, and others. Jokić Is Setting a Floor, Not Making a Promise

They are not, on paper, the clear contender many hoped for after the championship core’s earlier peaks.   Believing Jokić does not require ignoring the roster holes or financial limits. It means accepting that his honesty usually tracks reality. He is not promising a title run. He is saying the team will be functional and competitive, an understated baseline that matches both his personality and the current construction of the roster.    Whether that is enough for Nuggets fans depends on what they expect from the Jokić era in its later stages. The star has given his measured take. The front office still has work to do to make “okay” feel like more than a consolation.
