Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant are the three greatest players of the 2010s era, and they will always be linked.
James had defeated Curry and Durant in separate NBA Finals before they teamed up to beat him with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018.
The superstar trio are now in the twilight years of their respective careers, so it will be interesting to see whether they achieve more success.
One NBA pundit has explained why Curry is less likely to win another championship than his two greatest peers.
NBA expert David Jacoby was asked to pick who is least likely to make another NBA Finals appearance out of Curry, James, and Durant.
He made the “easy” decision to choose Curry because he will “sacrifice” his title chances by sticking with the Warriors until his retirement.
“This was easy for me. Easy. Steph Curry. I’m a bit lower on the current state of the Warriors than most,” Jacoby explained.
“I hear, ‘Al Horford is coming!’ I’m like, ‘Al Horford is coming to save the day?’ They lost Kevon Looney. It’s a Quinten Post and Al Horford frontcourt. Draymond Green can make a lot of things look good on defense, but I am concerned about this team.
“I have also taken into consideration that you said last finals, not just this year. I think Steph is going to, right or wrong… I love the guys who stay at one place their entire career, and I feel like Steph is going to be one of those guys.
“I think he will sacrifice his ability to win another championship or go to the finals to stay in a Warriors jersey for his career. You know who is not going to do that? Kevin Durant, who just joined the two-seed.
“They clearly got better on paper because they’re a young team, and everyone is going to take a leap next year. The Rockets are better than they were last year, and they went toe-to-toe with the Warriors in a game 7.
“I also feel like LeBron James has Luka Doncic… I’m not going to sit here and say the Lakers are going to make the finals. I’m not going to make that prediction, but there’s more than a one percent chance that they will.
“It looks like LeBron will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year, and he’s not going to join the Wizards.”
Steph Curry and LeBron James have clearly been more successful than Kevin Durant so far, each winning four championships compared to two.
Plus, Durant won his two titles alongside Curry on the Warriors. He did win Finals MVP both times, but Curry will always be remembered as the leader of those teams.
Players | Finals Appearances | Finals Record | Finals MVPs |
LeBron James | 10 | 4–6 | 4 |
Stephen Curry | 6 | 4–2 | 1 |
Kevin Durant | 4 | 2–2 | 2 |
While some will criticize LeBron for losing so many, it makes more sense to praise his consistency in making a remarkable 10 Finals. Surely it’s better to finish runner-up than not make the last round?
The LA Lakers star also has four Finals MVPs, whereas Curry was not the best player on a title-winning team until 2022.
