Why this team makes most sense in deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo

Four seasons ago, the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Phoenix Suns for the NBA title. Fast forward to 2025, and Milwaukee is dealing with its third consecutive first-round playoff exit and faces a bleak future.

Star guard Damian Lillard, who will turn 35 on July 15, will probably miss the entire 2025-26 season while recuperating from Achilles tendon surgery. And, for the first time in his career, Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is considering asking for a trade.

In a story published Monday, ESPN's Bobby Marks put together a tier ranking of how well-positioned NBA teams are to make a deal for Antetokounmpo, who averaged 30.4 points and 11.9 rebounds this season.

The teams at the top of the list are the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs. The Brooklyn Nets, Utah Jazz and Detroit Pistons follow, but when considering picks, players and potential value to offer, the Spurs make the most sense as a landing spot for Antetokounmpo, who will turn 31 on Dec. 6.

"We won't list Houston and San Antonio as the favorites just yet, considering Antetokounmpo has not asked to be traded and there is no list of preferred destinations. However, in the case he does, Houston and San Antonio fit all the requirements: draft assets, young players, sizable contracts and a win-now roster even after trading for Antetokounmpo," Marks wrote.

In the 2025 NBA Draft, the Spurs hold the No. 2 overall selection, a pick that could be enticing for rebuilding Milwaukee. It probably would take a pick-heavy package to get a deal done for Antetokounmpo, and the Spurs have a plethora of picks to deal in a potential trade.

"The Spurs still have equity in draft picks despite trading four first-round picks to acquire De'Aaron Fox at the deadline. They have two lottery picks in June and an additional three future tradable firsts. San Antonio has the Hawks' unprotected first in 2027 and two of its own starting in 2029," wrote Marks.

Plus, San Antonio also has young stars in guard Stephon Castle (14.7 PPG, 4.1 APG last season) and guard/forward Devin Vassell (16.3 PPG, 36.8% 3PT last season) who could sway Milwaukee to make a deal.

Nothing is certain and things could change between now and the draft on June 25, but it appears that a questionable future for Milwaukee could drive Antetokounmpo into the arms of another team. If that's the case, San Antonio seems like the best bet.
