If you love the Washington Wizards, you are highly likely among a very select group.
And let’s face it, the Wizards undoubtedly owe their fans a reason to feel excited. It’s been 45 years since they hit 50 wins in a season. No, really. Last time it happened was 1979, and even then, Washington lost in the Finals.
That was the Wizards’ last Finals appearance. Of course, they were known as the Bullets then. It’s when Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld, Bob Dandridge, Kevin Grevey and Tom Henderson donned the red, white and blue stripes that fans still hold near and dear today.
They won the title the year before that — and interestingly, finished with less than 50 wins that season too (44-38).
Fast forward to 2025. The Wizards are expected to be bad again next year. Their young players offer hope, but are any of them all that scintillating? I mean, does anyone think Alex Sarr or Bub Carrington will turn out to be repeat All-Stars? Maybe, but I doubt it.
So perhaps the Wizards should go after an older big name this offseason, a Kevin Durant or Paul George. Don’t mortgage the future on it and don’t handcuff yourself financially. But do something, anything, to get fans excited.
I actually like the trade proposal that we ran earlier, with the Wizards acquiring George (and even moving up to No. 3 in the draft). Would the team be that much better? No, probably not. But at least people would start buying merch.
Anyway, I’ll write about all this more in the future in a much longer standalone post. Just know I’m not criticizing Washington’s front office, because there does seem to be a plan. But by golly, do something to draw some interest. At this point, I don’t think there’s a more forgotten team in the league, perhaps in all of sports.
It’s been 50 years since the Wizards were contenders. It may be at least five more. In the meantime, the franchise has to do something to fill the seats and give people a reason to watch.
