The Wizards still haven’t tipped their hand publicly. But league-wide belief appears to be moving in one direction.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, rival teams increasingly expect Washington to select former BYU star AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick in Tuesday night’s NBA Draft.
Charania said during ESPN’s draft preview show that the Wizards are “really narrowing on AJ Dybantsa” as they move closer to making their decision.
“The league-wide belief right now is that BYU’s AJ Dybantsa is who is being looked at strongest for that No. 1 overall pick,” Charania said.
Dybantsa has been locked in a two-man race with former Kansas guard Darryn Peterson throughout much of the pre-draft process.
And to be honest, nobody seems to know for certain what Washington will do. Not even the players.
According to The Athletic’s Josh Robbins, both Dybantsa and Peterson said Monday they have not been informed of the Wizards’ plans.
“I’m going to find out when you find out,” Dybantsa said.
Meanwhile, Peterson addressed reports suggesting he was trying to avoid certain teams near the top of the draft.
“I’m definitely not dodging any team,” Peterson said. “Whoever takes me, I’m going to come in and be delighted to be there.”
Peterson met with the Jazz over the weekend after previously working out for Washington. The Wizards, however, continue to hold all the cards. And while Peterson remains firmly in the mix, multiple recent reports have pointed toward Dybantsa.
Either way, with the draft less than 24 hours away, the smoke is beginning to get a little thicker.
According to Marc Spears of Andscape, Washington is not entertaining trade offers for the top pick and is expected to stay put at No. 1.
