Wizards Reveal Narrative-Packed NBA Cup Schedule

Their recent skid of loss-filled campaigns is expected to come to a stop this year, a generally-accepted precedent that goes beyond the welcoming of No. 1 NBA Draft pick AJ Dybantsa. Trae Young's accepted a generous paycheck through the remainder of the decade with a fleet of prospects at his side, and Washington's exciting NBA Cup schedule reflects just how many storylines the new-and-improved Wizards have to face over the coming months.

10/30: Wizards Measure Up Against the Hornets

The Wizards' matchups against the Charlotte Hornets always seem to soak up a special place in both fan bases' hearts. Even if we look beyond the brief online beef that both parties embraced last season, both of the longtime Eastern Conference cellar-dwellers each seem ready to embark upon quests to end their respective playoff droughts.

The Hornets came pretty close to crashing the postseason just a few months ago, but 44 wins wasn't quite enough to escape the tightly-contested Play-In Tournament bracket. Now that it's the Wizards who've lucked into a franchise-altering newcomer, they hope that Dybantsa can recreate Rookie of the Year runner-up Kon Knueppel's instant success in pushing the squad ahead of their Southeast Division rival.

The Wizards' Cup opener will serve as a strong litmus test for how serious they are about challenging 2026-27's Play-In tier of fringe conference challengers. The Hornets, having just lost their offensive fulcrum in LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves for spare parts, will have to fend off Young, Dybantsa, Anthony Davis and friends with a Knueppel and Brandon Miller-led attack. If there's any local adversary to vault, it's the squad who's set to reevaluate their competitive core on the fly.

11/6: Trae Young's Return to Atlanta

Unpacking this matchup requires considerably less deep thought. The Wizards' new franchise point guard has yet to square off against the Atlanta Hawks since getting dealt in a January trade, and depending on how the remaining schedule rollout progresses, this could be his first chance to personally stick it to his former employers.

The Atlanta crowd should be excited to see their former 4x All-Star on the court for the first time in nearly a year, especially considering the Hawks' present formidability. Unlike the Hornets, they actually made the playoffs last spring, taking a few games off of the eventual-champion New York Knicks in proving their comfortability post-Young, and they spent their summer investing even further in their defensive-minded vision with a flurry of rotational additions.

Additionally, the Hawks are the only direct Cup groupmate who the Wizards had to deal with last year. And when they did clash, the Wizards secured a rousing 132-113 win behind CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert's combined 65 points.

Those two former Wizards ended up accounting for Young's return trade package, adding another flavor to what projects to be about as personal a game as these Wizards have played since going all-in on their rebuild.

11/20: AJ Dybantsa visits Caleb Wilson's Bulls

Cup groups are limited from combining teams from different conferences, set on getting the most out of the squads who were already assumed to account for the most regional matchups. That means that Dybantsa and the Wizards were effectively restricted from challenging Darryn Peterson's Utah Jazz or Cameron Boozer's Memphis Grizzlies- at least, in a Cup-specific setting.

He is, however, entitled to the Chicago Bulls, who are now headlined by No. 4 draft pick Caleb Wilson. And judging by the star forward's early NBA Summer League returns, Wilson vs. Dybantsa should produce plenty of fireworks.

They were arguably the two most dynamic above-the-rim threats in this past draft class, and Wilson isn't tasked with fitting into nearly as many proven talents as Dybantsa has to play alongside. That may hinder the Bulls' chances of further complicated the eastern standings, but Wilson should have the leeway to take it at Dybantsa all he wants in a showdown between Rookie of the Year favorites.

11/24: Wizards Host Celtics for Biggest Challenge Yet

Finally, we arrive at the sole frightening championship contender in the Wizards' group. Even if the Jaylen Brown/Paul George trade remains about as reviled as it was in the moment, George and Jayson Tatum should have no problem continuing to churn out wins within their regular season-tested system, especially given the amount of classic outings the stars have enjoyed in D.C.

If the Wizards want to surpass their previous milestone of winning multiple Cup games in actually attending the tournament's knockout stage, having to measure up against a team as deep and well-oiled as the Celtics may do them some good. And considering that their vast young corps is now headlined by a Brockton, MA native in Dybantsa, the young star may be armed with a little extra motivation to take it right at the usually-dominant competitors.
