Wolves GM Talks C. Williams, LaMelo, DiVincenzo, More

In an interview with Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News, Timberwolves general manager Matt Lloyd discussed several topics, including forward Cody Williams, whom the team acquired via trade last weekend from Utah. That deal created financial flexibility for the Wolves, who officially signed Jonathan Kuminga on Thursday.

Lloyd pointed to Williams’ play at the end of 2025/26 as one reason the Wolves were intrigued by the former lottery pick. He added that the team is hopeful the 21-year-old can be a versatile defender on the wing and will evaluate his fit in training camp.

“There was a reason he was the 10th pick in the draft,” Lloyd said. “We’re going to get a chance to see it here starting Tuesday (when most of the roster is expected to report to Minnesota) and then take it into the preseason and see what type of role he can etch out.”

• The Timberwolves did “extensive background work” on LaMelo Ball before they decided part with several assets to acquire the former Rookie of the Year, according to Lloyd, who said people around the league referred to Ball as a dedicated and focused worker. Lloyd said Ball has been around the team for much of the summer to get to know his new organization and teammates and to work on his game and receive treatment. “He’s been in there 90 percent of the day since the day we acquired him,” Lloyd said. “He’s a hard worker, an incredibly focused worker, and he creates an atmosphere of positive energy.”
• Lloyd expressed optimism that Donte DiVincenzo might be able to return to action from a torn Achilles tendon at some point in 2026/27, praising the veteran guard for his on- and off-court impact and his diligent approach to rehabilitation. DiVincenzo suffered the injury in the first round of the playoffs and Lloyd said it wouldn’t be fair to place a potential return timeline on the 29-year-old, but stressed how important DiVincenzo has been to the Wolves the past couple years and that he’ll be around the team throughout the season.
• Asked about a potential extension for DiVincenzo, Lloyd didn’t rule it out, but noted that the team has the entire league year (through June 30, 2027) to determine what to do. When Wolfson asked about Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert being extension-eligible, Lloyd suggested the team might wait and see how the team performs during the season. McDaniels’ extension window closes in October, but he still has three years left on his contract. Lloyd’s interview also covered Anthony Edwards’ growth as a leader and Ayo Dosunmu being likely to play major minutes whether he starts or comes off the bench.
