The Boston Celtics will begin their 2025-26 NBA season without Jayson Tatum.
Jayson Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon, which he suffered during the 2025 playoffs.
He underwent surgery and is expected to miss most or all of the 2025-26 NBA season, though his exact return timeline is unknown.
The Boston Celtics are going into this season not expecting Tatum to be back at any point during the year as they try and remain competitive without him.
Even though Tatum has already made tremendous progress, him returning to action this season is highly unlikely.
Alternate Governor and CEO of the Celtics, Wyc Grousbeck made it clear that the Celtics are assuming he’s not coming back this season.
The Celtics are clearly taking a safe approach when it comes to their superstar.
“We’re not going to ever ask him to come back. We’re assuming he’s not coming back, and we’re not even going to have any discussions about it.
“At some point, he’s going to be ready to come back.
“Whenever that is, we’ll get five doctors’ opinions, we’ll ask him how he feels, and then we’ll all decide jointly — let’s do this, whatever month that is, whenever that is.
“But there are no discussions in the meantime. He’s expected to not be here this season.”

Unlike years past, the Celtics aren’t expected to compete for an NBA Championship this season.
They went through a complete overhaul this summer. The Celtics traded their 2024 championship pieces Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis.
With Tatum set to miss the upcoming season, it seems like this will be a gap year for the Celtics.
However, one player who could have a breakout year is Jaylen Brown who has an impressive point per game average when Tatum doesn’t play.
