You Don’t Mess With God': The Only Player Who Was 'Off-Limits' for Shaquille O’Neal’s Trash Talk

Shaquille O’Neal famously feared no one on the basketball court. However, the Lakers legend recently revealed the only player he refused to trash-talk.

To this day, Shaq loves trash-talking. Shaq famously feared no one and rarely hesitated to speak his mind. But the Los Angeles Lakers legend maintained a reverential distance from just one player: it was Michael Jordan.

“Michael Jordan. You don’t want to mess with God,” he said on the PBD podcast while revealing the only NBA player he never trash-talked to during his playing years. “You’ve got to stay away from Mike. Leave that man alone.”

Shaq is one of the few players who ever had success against Jordan in the playoffs between the Bulls’ legend’s first title and the sixth title.

When Jordan played his first playoff series since coming back from his first retirement, he faced Shaq’s Orlando Magic in the second round.

The Magic defeated Jordan’s Bulls 4-2. Magic went to the NBA Finals, but was swept by the Houston Rockets.

But Shaq knew it might have been the last time he ever had a chance against Jordan.

The Bulls legend came back the next year, won three consecutive titles, and announced his retirement.

Shaquille O’Neal recalls his fear of facing Michael Jordan

There is almost ‌unanimous agreement that Jordan is the most feared player in the NBA. His high competitive stamina and fearless attacking game against his opponents were some things that made him the most feared face in the league.

Such was Michael Jordan’s aura, and Shaq felt it in his veins when he was set to face the “God” for the first time in his career. Shaq narrated the sense of fear he felt with every step he took inside the Bulls stadium.

“It was the first time I really felt scared,” Shaq said on the New Heights podcast in June 2025. “So, Chicago had an old stadium, and you had to walk up the stairs. And when you walk up the stairs, they play that old Bulls music. Yes, that laser show comes on,” Shaq narrated in a separate interview.”

“And there he is. God. The same God that was on your poster in high school and college,” he added.

Jordan and his Bulls won the game. Jordan finished the game with 23 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks in 37 minutes. Shaq had 19 points in 41 minutes.
