'You Get Penalized for Being Strong': Gilbert Arenas Weighs In on NBA Flopping

The game looks different right now, and players falling to the floor on light contact is a major reason why. Speaking on his show, Gil’s Arena, in early May 2026, he commented on the ongoing playoff officiating debate.

Arenas pointed out the frustration around the current state of foul calls. The conversation started after Jaylen Brown made comments following a Game 7 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Brown called out Joel Embiid for flopping, claiming the big man was rewarded with extra calls.

“The reason these guys started flopping is because they had to oversell fouls that refs was like ‘just play through the s***. I’m not calling everything. Now they got to pretend they getting hit worse than they are. Arenas explained that referees tell players to just play through the contact because they will not call everything to avoid fouling out stars.”

He then added, “You get penalized for being strong. You’re telling me LeBron, Jokic, you (Jaylen Brown), Giannis, y’all can’t get to the FT line, but Trae Young and SGA can get there 10 times?”

He named these players who absorb heavy hits. Meanwhile, smaller guards like Trae Young and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earn trips to the line by hunting contact.

Referees allow much more physical contact against stronger players inside the paint. Arenas noted that even James had to adapt and start selling calls later in his career to get fair treatment.

Gilgeous-Alexander shot around 9 free throws a game this season, and Young has posted similar numbers. On the other hand, Jokic only took about 7 free throws a game, while James averaged just 4 to 5 attempts.

Yet the NBA’s punishment system shows little effect on the problem. More than twenty elite players have been fined for exaggerating contact under strict anti-flopping rules.

The post-game fines for Embiid, Jokic, and Harden flopping violations cost $2,000 each, but the players continue to perform flopping actions.

This officiating trend is fundamentally altering how the game is played. Favorable whistles for flopping are now deciding high-stakes playoff matchups.

How NBA Flopping Is Winning Playoff Games

The 2026 playoffs show how much this issue affects final results. Close playoff games are now decided by free-throw margins.

For example, Embiid shot 37 free throws in the series against the Boston Celtics, including 11 in Game 7 to score 34 points.

This changes the style of play across the league. This encourages teams to hunt contact rather than clean shots.

The NBA did try to fix this by introducing a strict anti-flopping rule with technical fouls in the 2012-13 season.

However, that rule is rarely used today to preserve star entertainment. It leaves a question about what basketball even looks like in today’s NBA.

Do you agree with Arenas’ take on strong players getting penalized?
