Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant was recently compared to NBA legend Larry Bird.

For most, Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant is one of the greatest scorers to have ever graced the hardwood.

Even with a 6’11” physique, Durant is a fluid scorer who can impact the outcome of a game on any given night.

But what if KD played during the 1980s, instead of Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird? Well, Patrick Beverley shared his two cents on the hypothetical scenario.

Patrick Beverley says Kevin Durant would average 50 PPG if he played in Larry Bird’s era

Bird’s rivalry with LA Lakers legend Magic Johnson is widely credited for reviving the popularity of the NBA among fans.

Aside from that, Bird also had a phenomenal individual career, where he won three NBA Championships. The Celtics legend was a sensational scorer, but Beverley believes that the Slim Reaper is a notch above him.

“I don’t think it’s close, KD. What are we talking about? If Kevin Durant was playing when Larry Bird was playing, he would average 50.

“Kevin Durant would’ve been. Who would you put on him? Back then, the four was traditional fours,” Beverley said on his podcast.

Beverley’s take stirred up a lot of debate in the NBA community, with many calling him out for his controversial statement on Bird.

Eddie Johnson calls out Patrick Beverley

Aside from NBA fans, even former player Eddie Johnson took offense to Pat Bev essentially disrespecting Bird.

“And I will go on record and say you would have been in the Continental Basketball Association and not in the NBA in the 80’s,” Johnson wrote on X.

He added: “KD would have been amazing in the 80’s, but you have zero clue how good Larry Bird was. ZERO!”

While Johnson gave Durant his flowers, he was angry at Beverley for not knowing Bird’s ability on the hardwood.

As usual, the fans will be divided on the statement. Keeping that in mind, the best possible move forward is to stop comparing players from different eras and acknowledge individual greatness.
