'You'll be able to show people how good you really are' - Barrett's career-season puts him atop 2019 Draft Class scoring list

When RJ Barrett was traded to the Toronto Raptors, it wasn't just about getting a chance to play for the lone Canadian NBA franchise. It was also his opportunity to prove his worth. Barrett was the 3rd overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, but although he put up great numbers in NY, RJ always felt held back.

Once the trade went down, one of the first to message the former Blue Devil was Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic.

"When he got traded, I just remember texting him and saying, 'Now you'll be able to show people how good you really are,'" said Rajakovic.

Barrett is having another career season in Toronto

After averaging 21.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game in 32 games for the Raptors last season, RJ is putting up 23.6 points, 6.6 boards, and 5.8 dimes per contest so far this campaign. Not only are those numbers better than last year's, but all are also career highs for the 24-year-old.

Barrett scored 30 points against the New York Knicks on Monday night, including a basket that tied the game at 108, all with 42.0 seconds left in the game. The Knicks eventually pulled off the victory, but RJ's latest effort was another feather in the cap for the former Duke standout.

With 520 points scored up to Monday's games, the Canadian has now notched 6,590 career points, putting him atop the scoring list for the Class of 2019. Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland is next with 6,152 points, while Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant is the only other player from the Draft Class to score at least 6000 career points with 6,087.

Availability is the best ability

Barrett and Morant in the list's Top three is no surprise. Ja and RJ went two and three overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. Six out of the Top 10 names on the list were Top 10 picks, and all were first-round picks. The lowest-picked players are Jordan Poole and Keldon Johnson, who were drafted 28th and 29th, respectively.

What is surprising is that Zion Williamson, the No.1 overall pick, is just 8th on the list, despite leading his draft classmates in scoring average at 24.6 points per game. But in a sense, it's also not surprising, considering the number of contests "Zanos" has missed in his career.

Among the 2019 draftees, Williamson ranks only 30th in total games played, with 190 contests. Looking at the 2019 scoring list, half of the Top 10 are also in the Top 10 in total games played, which proves the timeless adage "availability is the best ability" yet correct once again. Barrett has missed only three of the Raptors' 25 contests, making his career year in Toronto even more impressive.
