The most significant yet unexpected occurrence to happen surrounding the Chicago Bulls during Zach LaVine's absence was the team's best and most renewing stretch of wins this season.
Zach was forced to watch the squad from the sidelines after missing more than a month due to foot difficulties. The Bulls, on the other hand, did not break a sweat as they fought for victory despite the absence of their top player.
The Bulls have gone 10-7 in their 17 games without LaVine, an unusually good run given their dependence on the All-Star's hot shooting. While this may add to his embarrassment in his pending trade case, Zach is more pleased that his team was able to win despite his inaction.
Perhaps the most important component of the Bulls’ positive streak without LaVine appeared in December when the entire ball club truly rose for a gradual recovery.
Throughout the said month, the Bulls used their collective approach to carve an impressive 9-5 in their record. Their dead-last efforts on both ends saw a massive bump as their offensive rating reached 117.3, which got placed in the Top 16th. Meanwhile, their defensive rating landed to 114.1 which was ranked as the ninth highest.
As he and the Bulls struggled before his absence, LaVine is happy that the team is now at least on the winning groove through the application of more ball movement and enhanced defensive tactics.
“We caught a great rhythm in December doing the same thing that we were working on in training camp,” LaVine said. “It was great to see it actually start coming in and clicking.”
With him finally back on the floor, all eyes are certainly watching how LaVine would pan out as the NBA's trade season looms.
Nevertheless, he remains committed to what he can continue bringing in and prove that he can contribute to the Bulls’ goals of achieving a fruitful season.
“There’s a narrative for everything,” LaVine said. “You can spin something one way, then take it another way the next day. I’m OK with that. As long as I come out here and do my job and be good with my guys, my teammates, and now that I’m healthy go out there and compete when I’ve been sitting down for the last month and a half — I’m more than fine with that.”
