Trading for Kevin Durant helped the Houston Rockets massively improve their roster for the 2025-26 NBA season.
While Kevin Durant’s arrival has Houston Rockets fans over the moon, the fanbase was delivered some concerning injury news.
Star guard Fred VanVleet is out for the season due to a torn ACL injury. The injury will likely hinder the Rockets’ chances of winning the 2026 NBA Championship.
With Durant all set to turn 37 years old soon, it’s obvious that the Slim Reaper is in the twilight years of his NBA career.
So much so that playing for the Rockets could very well be his final shot at winning another NBA Championship.
Keeping that in mind, what would have KD done if Fred VanVleet tore his ACL before free agency?
“I’m gonna say, still yes, because I just think Kevin Durant’s one of those guys. He went to college in Texas, from the DMV, ‘I can make it work if this is where I want to be,'” Zach Lowe said on his show.
Lowe wholeheartedly believes that Durant had his eyes set on the Rockets, and VanVleet’s injury didn’t impact him much.
But what about the Rockets’ championship odds with the veteran guard out for the season? They need a solid replacement to make things work.
Last season, VanVleet averaged 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game for the Rockets. Losing a solid guard like him is obviously a huge blow to the organization.
In fact, Lowe went as far as saying that the Rockets now have ‘close to zero’ chances of lifting the illustrious Larry O’Brien trophy next summer.
“I really do think this takes their championship equity close to zero. And if they don’t care about that, that’s fine,” Lowe continued.
He concluded, stating: “I just don’t think they can win three playoff series in the West without like a traditional point guard with proven championship experience.”
According to Lowe, being in the Western Conference will prove brutal for the Rockets. After all, there are several championship contenders in the conference, and they all have talented point guards running their offense.
