Alright, Bulls fans. The season is over, and what a wild ride it was.
The front office found magic in trading fan favorite Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey. The team also found gold in what looks like a draft steal in Matas Buzelis with the 11th pick.
But even with these moves, the fan base was splintered in the direction of the team as a play-in appearance lessened their chances at a top pick this year.
The release of Peter Patton, the Bulls’ Director of Player Development, has only sparked the fury of Bulls detractors.
Arturas Karnisovas asked for patience in his latest presser. But the truth is that the front office needs some exciting news to distract from the stink of mediocrity that has plagued this team.
Artūras Karnišovas on asking fans for patience:
"I'm asking fans for patience because we're in first year of that transition. I thought that the way we finished the year shows some promise… To finish 15-5 isn't a victory lap, but I think there are some positives." pic.twitter.com/M4a4Q4X8jU

The addition of Zion Williamson could be the shot of energy this team needs to create some excitement for long-suffering fans.
Zion Williamson is literally what happens when you give a raging bull a basketball and teach it how to dunk. He’s a walking highlight reel, having averaged 24.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists throughout his career.

He has a pure power game that he can impose at will, like a bully demanding lunch money on the school yard. And his career PER of 25.1 makes him one of the most impactful young stars the league has ever seen.
But Zion is not a stretch four, and his perimeter shooting is spottier than Wi-Fi on a plane. And he needs the ball to maximize his effectiveness in the paint.
So how would his presence mesh with the playmaking wizard skills that Josh Giddey possesses?
Well, Giddey’s game is about vision and tempo. Giddey’s passing could help unlock Zion’s efficiency even more. Imagine Giddey, pushing the break, hitting a runaway freight train like Zion as he sprints down the court.
HUGE NIGHT FOR JOSH GIDDEY

Zion is a career 67% finisher in the restricted area, which will cause matchup nightmares for players getting back on defense. Giddey’s improved three-point shooting also would make defenders think twice about doubling Zion in the paint.
Josh Giddey is one of three players in NBA history to have 28 points, 16 rebounds, 11 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals in a game.

Continue surrounding this pairing with shooters, and the spacing issues would start to shrink even more.

Zion has the tools to be a better defender than he has shown in his career. Athleticism, strength, and did we mention athleticism? However, his awareness has not always been where it should be, and he sometimes isn’t locked in on rotations.
But the bottom line is that the same tools used to make you an offensive star are the same when it comes to defense.
Giddey by no means has been a defensive stud throughout his career. However, his awareness and effort level have grown, as has his offensive responsibilities. He is no longer just a liability on the court when he is expected to defend.
Together, they’d need a rim-protecting big to anchor their defense, or they’re giving up buckets like pretzel samples in the mall.

Thankfully, they have a burgeoning defensive player like Matas Buzelis who could provide help in that regard.

The Bulls, led by Arturas Karnisovas, should jump at Zion’s non-guaranteed contract. Why? His scoring prowess and paint dominance would be another steal at a discounted price.
His injury history is definitely a reason to pause. He has played in only 214 games since 2019. But the non-guaranteed deal means low risk if he flops, and Chicago could easily cut ties without the cap pain.
But if he succeeds, Zion’s abilities could help transform the Bulls’ offense, which is too predicated on three-point shooting and attempts, into an efficient machine.
Karnisovas, who has been criticized for safe moves around the edges, could use this bold swing to escape the limitations of the present roster.
The Bulls can’t just rely on drafts or the 2026 free agency class to fix their issues. They need to take all the shots at relevance they can.
Adding Zion’s abilities to Giddey’s impressive playmaking skills would provide the juice needed to light up the Windy City for years to come.
