It has been a rollercoaster ride for New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson in his seven seasons in the NBA. After going first overall in the 2019 NBA Draft as one of the biggest prospects in history, the 6-foot-6 forward suffered an injury and was limited to just 24 games in his rookie year.
Injuries have been a major issue for Williamson throughout his NBA tenure. In fact, he missed the entire 2021-22 season due to a broken right foot. His weight has always been an issue as well. All these concerns have led to questions about his commitment to the game.
This season, Williamson has already dealt with multiple injuries. He’s missed 17 games already and could be forced to sit out again with a new ankle sprain. Williamson tweaked his right ankle on Saturday against the Utah Jazz. The injury sidelined him for Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers.
The injury does not appear to be serious, and it’s possible that Williamson was given the night off on the second night of a back-to-back set. Then again, it would not be surprising if this ends up being another multi-game absence for the former Duke Blue Devils star.
Williamson sat down with Malika Andrews of ESPN on Monday for an exclusive interview. One of the subjects they discussed was Williamson’s goal of suiting up for Team USA at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
"It's definitely a goal for me, and it'd be a huge honor to represent my country in the Olympics," he said. "But that goes back to I just got to make it happen. Yeah, I can sit here and talk, but I got to go out there and earn my spot and show them why I feel like I deserve a spot."

Williamson has never had the chance to represent the United States. He was named a finalist for the 2024 Olympics, but he never made the cut for the Paris Games.
Williamson knows, however, that he will need to get healthy and play at a consistently high level for him to see his plan through. There’s no denying that the two-time All-Star has what it takes. As he said, it’s just up to him to prove that he deserves to be on the squad.
