Entering the 2025 season, the Los Angeles Chargers had some questions about their defense after losing some key players to free agency.
One of the team's top pass rushers over the last decade, Joey Bosa, departed for the Buffalo Bills after the Chargers released him. Cornerbacks Asante Samuel Jr. and Kristian Fulton are both no longer on the roster. Starting defensive tackle Poona Ford stayed in Los Angeles, but just with the Rams now.
In total, nine players on defense did not re-sign with the team after their contracts ended and became free agents. There is some shifting going on with the lineup this year which might cause some uneasiness with the fan base on how the defense will look after a good 2024 season.
Bleacher Report writer Brad Gagnon wrote an article on writing one sentence for each team to describe the team's nightmare 2025 season. The focus for the Chargers was on the defense and its potential underperformance.
"The league's No. 1 scoring defense from 2024 is exposed as phony in several awful late-season performances and becomes a major weakness."
Los Angeles was indeed the number one scoring defense as they allowed just 17.7 points per game. The sentence brings up a concerning aspect of last year, as injuries caught up to the defense in the final five games of the season. All but one of those games featured the opponents scoring less than 20 points as the Chargers allowed an average of 25.2 points per game in that stretch.
The focus this offseason was to offload any players with durability issues, such as Bosa and Samuel, in exchange for younger players who can contribute. For example, Samuel and Fulton will be replaced by two fifth-round picks from last year's draft, Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still. 22-year-old Tuli Tuipulotu is set to replace Bosa full-time off the edge after his 8.5 sacks in 2024.
There might be some growing pains for the defensive unit, which ranked 11th last year in total defense, allowing 324.4 yards per game. The work the Chargers' scouting department has done in the previous five years has been building up to this moment where they will see some of these youngsters step up to the plate.
Fans will need to practice patience with this defense, but as the year goes on, this could end up being a scary good unit. Or it could be like that sentence showed and be a disaster which will bring all new questions going into next offseason.
