Accolades:

Pros:

  • Vision/Processing: Quickly diagnoses defensive fronts and identifies running lanes—decisive between the tackles with minimal hesitation.
  • Patience/Timing: Lets blocks develop naturally—shows controlled tempo before accelerating through openings with strong burst for his size.
  • Short-Area Agility: Loose hips and active feet allow him to string cuts together—maintains balance and forward momentum in congested traffic.
  • Power Through Contact: Converts speed to power effectively—lowers pads and runs through arm tackles to generate consistent yards after contact.
  • Contact Balance: Compact through collisions—absorbs hits from multiple angles while staying upright and finishing runs.
  • Scheme Fit (Gap/Power): Thrives in downhill concepts—vision and physical running style translate well to pull-lead and gap-heavy schemes.
  • Field Awareness: Keeps eyes downfield through cuts—consistently working toward extra yardage rather than settling for minimal gains.
  • Pass Protection: Shows willingness and functional strength—capable of squaring up blitzers and holding ground against interior pressure when engaged.

Cons:

  • Explosive Play Ability: Lacks home-run production—limited chunk gains against top competition and doesn’t consistently create explosive plays.
  • Ball Security: Turnover concerns are real—fumble history will raise questions about reliability in high-leverage situations.
  • Pass Protection Consistency: Regressed in his final season—too many missed assignments and failed pickups that will need immediate correction.
  • Receiving Limitations: Offers minimal impact in the passing game—routes lack fluidity and detail, limiting his effectiveness as a third-down option.
  • Age/Projection Window: Older prospect entering the league—shorter developmental runway with less margin for long-term growth.

Summary:

The film on McGowan paints a clear picture: a runner who identifies it, trusts it, and attacks it without hesitation. Between the tackles—especially in gap and power concepts—he plays with strong processing speed and a decisive, downhill mindset that translates cleanly. His most effective work at Kentucky came in those schemes, where he consistently rewarded solid blocking with sharp cuts and dependable contact balance. There’s also a noticeable edge to his game. He runs with urgency and purpose, finishing through contact with the demeanor of a player intent on making the most of every opportunity.
