The Washington Commanders are off to a 2-1 start, but it hasn't come easy with injuries and adversity in their schedule.
There are a lot of new pieces and parts of the team still settling in, but we had high expectations for three players who have really struggled to start the season. The team can be even better if these contributors can step up and get back to their best game, like we know they can.
This is honestly the biggest surprise for me this season. I had All-Pro hopes for Mike Sainristil this season, but he's off to a rocky start. Sainristil was a phenomenal outside corner in his rookie season, but he moved back in the slot, where he played in college, and we've seen a decline so far. Through three games, Sainristil has allowed 12 catches on 14 targets for 109 yards and a touchdown.
I still have high hopes that Sainristil can bounce back this season as he gets readjusted to his slot role, but it also wouldn't surprise me if he moves back outside if the team moves on from Marshon Lattimore, who is also struggling, after the season.

Another draft pick from last season who performed well, but moved to his more natural position was Brandon Coleman, and the move hasn't worked well at all. He was a solid left tackle as a third-round pick, but the addition of Laremy Tunsil made his move inside obvious, and his ceiling was higher at guard. In the first two games, he allowed six pressures and was one of the lowest graded pass blocking guards in the league. This led to him being a healthy inactive on Sunday, which shocked everyone.
We aren't sure what that means for his future with Chris Paul getting the start at left guard, and he dominated with his opportunity against the Raiders. Paul could very well be the starter if he plays as well as he did Sunday. Nick Allegretti looks to be the backup, so Coleman's role is still up in the air.

Another surprising player off to a slow start is linebacker Frankie Luvu, who was one of the best players on the team last year. Luvu has a team-high five missed tackles so far, and has allowed seven catches for 43 yards and two touchdowns in coverage. Teams know Luvu is a playmaker, and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. said teams are scheming for him differently this year.
"We had some conversations this week," Whitt said. "The first two games, people are treating him [Luvu] more like a big. So he's getting more protections turned to him, getting more blocks by the tackles and the linemen, other than the backs. Where last year, he got more of the backs. . .When you produce and you show what you did, have the type of season that he had last year, you're going to be treated as such."

It's still early in the season, of course, but these three players stepping up and playing like we know they can will help boost the team to be even better, especially with a tough schedule and multiple injuries popping up. We saw last year how well these players can play, and it's only a matter of time before things click again.
