The Green Bay Packers concluded training camp with a joint practice with NFC opponents, specifically the Seattle Seahawks. While the day’s events were mostly defined by some viral footage of the two teams engaged in several violent brawls, there was still a lot to learn from the sections of practice where the squads were actually playing football and not simply fighting each other.
The Green Bay Packers are only going to go as far as their quarterback will take them – and Jordan Love was able to return to the practice field on Thursday to face some real opponents.
While Love was held out of 11-on-11 portions of practice, he did participate in 7-on-7 drills against the Seahawks first-team defense. During the portion of practice where video footage was not allowed, Packers beat writer Michael Gross narrated the action, including some strong play from Love. The Packers quarterback is making his way back from a ligament issue in his hand.
Love almost had Golden on a back corner fade where the rookie reached up to make a one handed catch in tight coverage. Incomplete but still looked cool. #Packers

Overall, it sounds like the starting offense was not at its sharpest against a strong Seahawks defense. During the red zone period of 7-on-7, the Packers struggled to score.
Sterling red zone 7 on 7 for #Seahawks defense vs Packers QB Jordan Love. Love had 12 shots from the 6. Only 2 TDs, 1 when S Julian Love slipped on the loose grass.

Love is still getting back to full strength, so some suboptimal play in 7-on-7 is not exactly going to raise the alarm bells. But it is unfortunate that the starting offense was not able to be more successful during 7-on-7.
Despite the team’s issues in 7-on-7, the 11-on-11 period was much more successful. Even without Love in at QB, the team had a lot of success against a stout Seahawks defense that could end up as one of the better units in the league.
Rookie Anthony Belton confidently said that the offense was “getting after” their opponents, saying that such events were probably part of the catalyst for the chippiness.
When the large fights erupted between the Packers offense and the Seahawks defense, Love was on the sideline while teammates like Zach Tom and Tucker Kraft engaged in the brawl. Countless punches were thrown over the course of the day. Even Love was surprised by the feistiness and admitted that he had not seen many fights of that caliber.
“I think when you get both sidelines clearing, it’s tough. Try your best to break it up and things like that, but it’s going to happen, man. I don’t know. There’s no answer for that.”
In any case, while the large fights are obviously regrettable, it is a good sign if the Packers offense was playing well enough to reportedly spark some of the fisticuffs.
While the Packers first-team offense enjoyed some good series against the Seahawks, the first-team defense had their issues throughout the day. Seattle’s new quarterback Sam Darnold appears to have already established a great rapport with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who had a tremendous day against the Packers secondary despite some good coverage overall.
Smith-Njigba having a day for Seahawks. 2 TDs in RZ 7 on 7. You’d think he and Darnold have played together for longer than a few months. Not like he’s wide open, but dude just makes plays vs decent Packers coverage.

Immediately after the fight, Sam Darnold threw a TD pass to JSN with Kamal Hadden in coverage. JSN was very fired up after that one. https://t.co/HaC7SWJN74

Despite Smith-Njigba’s stellar outing, Packers safety Evan Williams got the last laugh in the two-minute-drill section of practice. After interior pressure from rookie Warren Brinson, Darnold lofted the ball deep towards his favorite target. However, Williams swooped in and grabbed the interception.

Good lord the push up front from Warren Brinson. Likely would end in a sack

Williams has continued to always be around the ball, an encouraging sign for a player that many are hoping will take the next step after a strong rookie season.
The Packers will now face the Seahawks in their preseason finale on Saturday.
