Last season, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, and head coach Andy Reid wanted to help the Kansas City Chiefs be the first-ever franchise to win three-straight Super Bowls.
That goal almost came to fruition when they romped their way through the regular season and the playoffs to reach Super Bowl LIX. Hopes were high, and the owners paid NBA legend Pat Riley compensation for using the phrase three-peat on merchandise.
They realized before the game ended that all those preparations would go to waste. Their opponents, the Philadelphia Eagles, were toying with the then-back-to-back champions.
Heartbroken, they entered this offseason with one collective goal: to return to their Vince Lombardi trophy-lifting days. That goal currently looks a bit out of reach, especially with the way they are playing.
They might be 4-3 after 7 weeks of football, but many are concerned the team does not have the spark in them to be Super Bowl contenders. They also have a tough remaining schedule when compared with their peers.
Even then, the core has it in them to try and win their fourth ring in seven seasons. But for that to happen, they have to look at solving some of the Chiefs’ underlying problems.
During the Kansas City Chiefs’ struggles early in the season, some analysts believed the team’s lack of creativity on offense was showing its ugly side again this season.
Other than a couple of big plays, Travis Kelce has not had a great season so far. Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown and Xavier Worthy have been inconsistent, and JuJu Smith-Schuster seems to be more interested in talking trash with opponents.
In Week 7, they finally got back Rashee Rice after his league-induced suspension was over. He played a crucial part, catching two touchdowns in their blowout win.
However, that was against the Las Vegas Raiders. The real test is when they go up against top-tier defenses. They will quite a few of them the rest of the way, and it is up to Patrick Mahomes to exploit his receivers to the max.
If the Chiefs’ offense has to gather enough steam to ensure they are better than other top opponents, the star QB has to bring back his game management and adjustments to plays.
Patrick Mahomes and his offensive unit might finally be getting the chance to impose their will, but the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense has not yet done so.
Coached by Steve Spagnuolo, this year’s edition of this defense had its best game of the season against the Raiders, shutting them out in all four quarters.
However, that is one of the worst offensive units in the league, and was not a difficult prospect for any mid to good defense. The real challenge is when they face electric offenses, such as the ones they are going to face over the next few weeks.
The Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, and Dallas Cowboys have it in them to light up any team. If the Chiefs are to avoid losing ground in the playoff seedings, Spagnuolo has to devise a clever plan to ensure Chris Jones and his unit succeed.
This NFL season, the usual Super Bowl hopefuls have faced some sort of issue. Therefore, the current leaderboard is not indicative of who will stake their claim in the playoffs.
What this does for the Kansas City Chiefs is that it makes it difficult to predict where teams will end when the regular season ends. They are already lagging behind the Broncos and Chargers in their division.
This means the Chiefs cannot give opposing teams any leeway the rest of the season. Every game should be a win if they are to stay in the hunt for at least a Wild Card berth.
Then, if they play well when they meet these two division rivals later in the season, the team can hope to leapfrog them in the standings. The franchise does not have a margin of error, as they currently stand 8th in the AFC.
The wrong matchup could impede their chances of winning their fourth Super Bowl in 7 seasons. Therefore, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the rest of the team have to keep reminding themselves that they have to win every single remaining game.
