The San Francisco 49ers entered Sunday’s matchup shorthanded, forced to play without quarterback Brock Purdy, who suffered an injury in their Week 1 victory.
With Mac Jones stepping in as the starter against the New Orleans Saints, the 49ers still found a way to get it done, pulling out a 26-21 win to move to 2-0 on the young season.
Jones delivered a strong performance, completing 25 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Christian McCaffrey also looked back in form, rushing 13 times for 55 yards while adding six receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown — and making NFL history in the process.
Following the game, the 49ers announced that McCaffrey became just the third running back in league history, joining Marshall Faulk and Lenny Moore, to record at least 50 rushing touchdowns and 30 receiving touchdowns.

Fans reacted to McCaffrey's historic achievement:
"Now that’s great company right there," a fan said.
Someone else added, "Really hope he doesn't get hurt. If he keeps the production this season, he'll solidify his case for the Hall of Fame like he deserves. Maybe another OPOY."
Another person wrote, "Great to have a healthy CMC!"
"CMC isn’t human," one more fan commented.
Christian McCaffrey has had a remarkable NFL career, but it hasn’t come without its share of setbacks due to untimely injuries.
He missed nearly the entire 2024 season with Achilles tendinitis, just a year after winning Offensive Player of the Year in 2023 and helping lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl.
Now, keeping McCaffrey healthy is a top priority for a San Francisco team aiming to stay in contention. The 49ers are set to host the Arizona Cardinals next week, with Mac Jones expected to once again start at quarterback.
