49ers Announce Roster News Amid NFL Season

The San Francisco 49ers are off to a hot start this 2025 NFL season, going 4-1 through five weeks of pro football. However, it has also been a brutal run for them injury-wise, with several players missing games.

Quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with a toe injury, while wide receiver Ricky Pearsall has been nursing a knee problem. Both players missed the Niners' game against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5.

Purdy and Pearsall did not participate during the 49ers' Wednesday practice due to their injuries, along with RB Christian McCaffrey, DE Robert Beal, DT Alfred Collins, DE Yetur Gross-Matos, WR Jauan Jennings, WR Jordan Watkins and LT Trent Williams.

Amid their injury woes, the 49ers made some roster decisions to address their needs. For one, San Francisco signed defensive lineman Bruce Hector to the practice squad, while releasing safety Jaylen Mahoney in a corresponding move.

Furthermore, the 49ers also "announced they have opened the practice window for DL Kevin Givens."

Givens was placed on the injured reserve before the 2025 season started due to a pectoral injury he suffered during training camp in early August. The 49ers now have 21 days to elevate the 28-year-old veteran to the active roster, or else place him on the season-ending injured reserve list or release him.

Givens' practice window being opened doesn't mean that he's guaranteed to play when the 49ers play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6 on Sunday.

Regardless, having more active bodies should be beneficial for a 49ers squad ravaged by injuries early in the season.
