49ers' bring recent draft pick's season to an end
Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are two games away from the Super Bowl, but Danny Gray won’t play a role in helping them get there.

San Francisco did not activate the second-year receiver before Wednesday’s deadline having opened his 21-day practice window last month. Gray has not played all year because of a shoulder injury.

The 49ers don’t have a need at the receiver position and they instead look poised to activate safety and core special teams player George Odum back to the 53-man roster before Saturday’s Divisional Round matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

Long-term, Gray’s lost season will raise questions about the former third-round pick’s status on the roster.

With Ronnie Bell having played regularly as a rookie and scored two touchdowns this year, and the 49ers possessing 11 picks in this year’s draft, there is a good chance Gray could find himself on the wrong end of a position battle to start next season having made just one catch in his NFL career.
