49ers' Brock Purdy calling Super Bowl shot after blowout playoff loss

The last time that football fans saw the San Francisco 49ers in action, quarterback Brock Purdy and the Niners were suffering a humbling 41-6 blowout loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Nevertheless, Purdy made it known while speaking at the Dwight Clark Legacy Series event on Wednesday night that he believes the 2026 49ers can compete for more than just a postseason berth.

Super Bowl loss still leaves bad taste in Brock Purdy's mouth

"You guys have seen it in years past — NFC Championship, getting to the Super Bowl, being right there," Purdy explained, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "Obviously, how 2023 ended with that taste in our mouth of being right there and not being able to finish, obviously, we have what it takes to go all the way and win it when we're at full strength and good to go."

The 49ers suffered a brutal 25-22 overtime Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in February 2024. More recently, San Francisco endured yet another injury crisis last season that involved key contributors such as Purdy, pass-rusher Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner missing significant time before tight end George Kittle went down with a torn Achilles during the 49ers' wild-card win at the Philadelphia Eagles in January.

It's too early to say if Kittle will return to the lineup for the 49ers' Week 1 game versus the Los Angeles Rams in Australia this coming September.

Brock Purdy challenges teammates after 2025 season, rough ending to campaign

"You have to go out, you have to earn it," Purdy said about the 49ers bouncing back from the loss at Seattle. "You have to have the chip on your shoulder and be a team that goes out and hunts. For what we did last year, with guys going down, having young guys and new guys step up and ready to go, and for us to go into the playoffs and get a win on the road in Philly and all that, that's, for us, it's very encouraging, obviously, going into this year, getting our guys back and healthy. But having that same chip on the shoulder, you can't lose it."

The 49ers adding longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans to the roster this offseason should help Purdy in his pursuit of a championship ring. As of Thursday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had the 49ers tied for fifth among the betting favorites at +900 odds to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LXI.
