49ers' Brock Purdy quotes Tom Brady when speaking about improving

Intentionally or not, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy borrowed a line recently delivered by retired living legend Tom Brady as Purdy spoke about continuing to improve.

"...That’s like that chip that I always have on my shoulder, and no matter what everyone else is saying — man, like I know that there’s another level that I can get to and so that’s where I’m trying to get," Purdy told reporters during a news conference, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "And you know, taking it one day at a time, but never being comfortable with where I’m at."

On the latest edition of his "Let's Go!" SiriusXM show and podcast, Brady praised Purdy and noted the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft is looking "to prove people wrong" while having "that chip on (his) shoulder like he does." Brady, of course, was drafted by the New England Patriots with overall selection No. 199 in 2000 and ultimately became the G.O.A.T. and a seven-time Super Bowl champion.

Purdy thus far has won all 12 regular-season and playoff games he's started and finished healthy, and ESPN stats show he began Friday leading the NFL among qualified players with an 83.5 adjusted QBR and a 123.1 passer rating on the season. As of Friday afternoon, OddsChecker listed the 5-0 49ers as 10-point favorites to earn a road win at a 2-2 Cleveland Browns side this Sunday that will be without quarterback Deshaun Watson (shoulder injury).

Nevertheless, Purdy made it known he's taking nothing for granted coming off San Francisco's 42-10 blowout win over the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday night.

"We still have left stuff out there, where we can be our best and still reach our full potential," Purdy added during his comments. "I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to reach that just because that’s like a perfect game and I don’t know if you can play an exactly perfect game in the NFL. But that’s like the standard, man, and that allows us to play really good."

On Friday, OddsChecker had the 49ers as the overall betting favorites at +450 odds to win Super Bowl LVIII. Assuming players such as Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner are right about the Niners possibly being better in January than they are today, injuries may be the only force capable of stopping what currently looks like a nearly unbeatable team.
