The 3-1 San Francisco 49ers want it known that they view starting quarterback Brock Purdy as "questionable" for their "Thursday Night Football" game at the 3-1 Los Angeles Rams.
Purdy seemed to bother his previously injured toe in San Francisco's 26-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4. While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Purdy revealed a worrisome update regarding the toe soreness he's been dealing with since the final Sunday of September.
As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted, Purdy admitted that he wouldn't have been able to play had San Francisco's Week 5 game at the Rams been scheduled for Tuesday evening. That said, Purdy was sure to add at that time that he had two days to get right for the matchup at SoFi Stadium.
"If I can play this game, I want to play," Purdy explained, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. "Obviously, I want to get right and get healthy and everything, but we need to win this game against the Rams. So that's how I'm looking at it."
Primary backup Mac Jones won a pair of September contests when Purdy was sidelined due to the initial toe injury. Over those victories, Jones completed 53-of-80 passes (66.3 percent) for 563 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
"Honestly, 'Thursday Night Football' games, they come quick, so anything can happen," Purdy acknowledged. "But I'm still hopeful that I can. We'll see."
Jones aggravated a PCL injury back on Sept. 21 but indicated on Tuesday that he'll be good to go if his number is called before Thursday night's contest kicks off.
"That's your job as a backup, and you're not playing the first snap if you're backing up, and then everything else is fair game," Jones said about handling uncertainty related to who will start the Rams game. "I definitely approach it that way. I have a good system that I believe in, and the coaches definitely have us ready to play. So that's your job as a quarterback, whether you're a starter or backup."
On Tuesday afternoon, ESPN BET had the 49ers as 5.5-point road underdogs against the Rams. That line had moved to 6.5 as of Wednesday morning, which could suggest certain insiders believe Jones and not Purdy will be San Francisco's QB1 for the prime-time showdown.
