Adam Schefter shares alarming Malik Nabers injury update

It was previously suggested that the New York Giants could re-sign veteran wide receiver and fan-favorite Odell Beckham Jr. this offseason if New York WR1 Malik Nabers takes "longer than expected" to recover from a second surgery for a "clean up" related to the torn ACL and torn meniscus he suffered late last September.

That was before it was learned on Monday that Beckham was having a workout with the Giants for the second time this spring.

During a Monday appearance on "Get Up," ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter hinted that Nabers may not be good to go for the Giants' Week 1 home "Sunday Night Football" game versus the rival Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 13.

"Hard to say" if Malik Nabers will play vs. Cowboys in Week 1

"It was a second surgery to address some of the scar tissue and some of the stiffness that he had after the first surgery," Schefter said about Nabers' most recent procedure. "It was not planned. It was not expected. ...The team is saying that it is hopeful -- hopeful -- that he'll be ready for the Sunday night regular-season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Clearly, he's a long way away from being ready. I think his status for that game right now is very much up in the air. Whether he'll be playing right now, hard to say."

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, Beckham's latest workout with the Giants went "reallllly well." However, ESPN's Jordan Raanan noted that the Giants were also "looking at veterans Juju Smith-Schuster, Braxton Berrios and Anthony Miller in that tryout."

Schefter later shared that the Giants are signing Berrios to a one-year deal.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh reportedly "loves" Beckham. Harbaugh coached Beckham when the two were with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2023 season.

That said, Beckham hasn't played in a regular-season game since December 2024. Additionally, there's no indication any other team is seriously interested in signing the 33-year-old this spring.

As for Nabers, the Giants won't be able to replace what he could offer the team if he misses more than just preseason games. It sounds like Harbaugh and Co. may be preparing themselves for Nabers to be a spectator through at least the matchup versus Dallas.

Giants not "encouraged" where Malik Nabers is in his recovery?

"They'll hope he continues to recover," Schefter added. "He's going to do everything he can to get back as soon as possible, but you can't be encouraged right now with where he's at."

The only real positive aspect about any and all Nabers-related updates from a Giants point of view is that the team's season opener is still three months away. Thus, plenty could change about Nabers' health over that stretch of time.
