In a surprising turn of events, Bryce Huff is walking away from football at the age of 27.

The San Francisco 49ers acquired Huff last offseason in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. He appeared in 15 games this past season, racking up 30 tackles, 15 QB hits, four sacks and two forced fumbles. It wasn't a career year for him, but he did flash his potential at times in Robert Saleh's system.

Even though San Francisco had Huff under contract for the 2026 season, he just announced his retirement on Instagram. The talented pass rusher shared a video of him discussing his passion for the sport, his college career at Memphis and his time in the NFL.

"I'm retiring from football," Huff said. "I started playing football when I was 4 years old. Growing up I wasn't the biggest or the strongest, I didn't really have many friends. Football kept me grounded, it gave me something to hold onto."

It's been a busy week for the 49ers.

The 49ers kicked off their week by signing Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans to a three-year deal that's reportedly worth $60.4 million.

Roughly 24 hours ago, the 49ers bolstered their defensive line by acquiring defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa from the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for the No. 92 overall pick in this year's draft.

With Huff retiring this offseason, the 49ers have a clear need at pass rusher. Perhaps they'll address that need in the draft or maybe, just maybe, they'll check in on Maxx Crosby.
