The San Francisco 49ers couldn't score a single touchdown in their last two meetings with the Seattle Seahawks.
To counter Mike Macdonald's elite defense, they brought in a borderline Hall of Fame wide receiver in Mike Evans.
The only problem is that he's no longer in his prime, and with a recent injury history and the franchise's own injury woes, this move was full of red flags.
That's why, with one preseason contest in the books and Evans already missing time in training camp, Bleacher Report analyst Brad Gagnon gave them a "C" grade for this move and predicted it will end poorly.
“An all-in 49ers team desperately needed a receiver who could make an immediate impact, and Evans went over 1,000 yards in each of his first 11 seasons,” Gagnon wrote. “But he’s now 33, coming off an injury-marred season, and dealing with a new ankle/foot injury in camp. There’s a decent chance this blows up in the team’s face.”
Evans is one of the most proficient pass-catchers of his generation, and he may go down as the greatest wide receiver in Tampa Bay Buccaneers' history.
That said, availability is the best of abilities, especially in pro football, and Kyle Shanahan's team has a history of top players missing games due to multiple ailments.
This move would probably have left the league in shambles three or four years ago.
But after watching Evans the last year or so, this has the makings of a ticking time bomb.
