The San Francisco 49ers will likely be without linebacker Dre Greenlaw when they host the Washington Commanders on Monday, October 19. The NFL suspended Greenlaw for one game without pay for "an act of unsportsmanlike conduct" during Sunday's 32-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
"During the second quarter, Greenlaw used his helmet to headbutt Seattle linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet, violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to 'any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship,'" the NFL said in a statement.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Greenlaw plans to appeal the suspension.

The NFL noted: "Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Greenlaw may appeal the suspension. Any appeal will be heard and decided upon by either Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera, or James Thrash, the hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline."
The sideline altercation began after Greenlaw hit Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold following a play in which Darnold had stepped out of bounds. The hit prompted Seattle players to converge on Greenlaw, escalating tensions on the sideline. Greenlaw was subsequently ejected after headbutting Jones.
It remains to be seen whether Greenlaw's appeal will change the outcome. The linebacker will likely miss the 49ers' Week 6 home game against Washington.
