  • The San Francisco 49ers lost Nick Bosa to a knee injury in Week 3
  • That loss has left them needing reinforcements for their pass rush as they try to keep themselves at the top of the NFC
  • General manager John Lynch revealed that he is having conversation bout making a trade to bring in an edge

The San Francisco 49ers have once again been hit hard by injuries this season.

Brandon Aiyuk has yet to return from the torn ACL he suffered last year. Nick Bosa has now suffered a season-ending ACL injury of his own. George Kittle is currently on IR. Brock Purdy and Ricky Pearsall are both out again for Week 6. Jauan Jennings is currently listed as questionable after missing last week.

Even Mac Jones, who is filling in for Purdy, is banged up right now.

Despite the injuries piling up, the 49ers currently hold a record of 4-1 and are 3-0 against their division.

The success they've had in the face of adversity has led fans to wonder what kind of reinforcements they might hope to see brought in ahead of the trade deadline.

General manger John Lynch was asked about this last week and said the team needed to "earn" the right to make a big move.

The 49ers went out and did just that in an overtime win on the road against the Los Angeles Rams.

When Lynch was asked about it again on Thursday, he had a different message.

During an interview with KNBR's Murph & Markus, Lynch said that he was having conversations about a trade, with an edge rusher being the focus.

During the interview, Lynch made it clear that he'll be ready to get something done if the 49ers find a deal that makes sense for them.

“But there’s plenty of discussions. Right now I’m real proud of the way, the effort our guys are playing with. And if we find a way to make our football team better and it aligns, then we will not be shy on pulling the trigger.”

Bosa is really the only player the 49ers need to be particularly worried about replacing right now.

Aiyuk will be ready eventually, which will put the wide receiver room in a better spot than where they began the season. Kittle is already eligible to return from IR and is expected to practice next week. Jones has been a surprisingly solid replacement for Purdy, who will be back at some point.

The way forward without Bosa is a bit less clear.

Luckily the team had already traded for Bryce Huff before the season. He has been able to carry some of the load with three sacks and 17 total pressures this year according to Pro Football Focus.

However, the team still needs somebody dependable to line up opposite him. So far, rookie Mykel Williams hasn't been the answer, which leaves a trade as the team's best option.

There are some interesting candidates who could be on the trade market ahead of this year's deadline. The biggest name is Trey Hendrickson.

Even on a bad Bengals team Hendrickson has continued to dominate this season, but their season likely being lost once Joe Burrow was injured means it won't make sense for Cincy to keep him around much longer.

He is in the last year of his contract with the team, which not only makes him a viable trade candidate, but also means that he'll fit into Kyle Shanahan's desire to get a player who helps this year and doesn't hurt next year.

The one drawback there is that if Hendrickson becomes available, there is sure to be competition to land him.

Kayvon Thibodeaux was expected to be a player available for trade this season simply because of the New York Giants' wealth of pass rushing talent. Now it's difficult to know what their plans for the year look like after their Thursday Night win over the Eagles.

Thibodeaux is also under contract for 2026.

Jaelan Phillips isn't quite the same caliber of player as the the other two, but he does have 16 pressures this season. He should be the cheapest option and is on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal.

At 1-4, with Tyreek Hill out for the year, and coming off of a loss to the Panthers, the Miami Dolphins should absolutely be looking to sell right now.

Whoever it is they're eyeing up, it seems like the 49ers re ready to make moves to keep themselves in contention for this season and they should have some good options to choose from in this trade market.
