Once again, the San Francisco 49ers made the rounds for the possibility of losing star OT Trent Williams.
With a cap hit of a whopping $38.841 million, the 12-time Pro-Bowler is reportedly a potential salary-cap casualty in the Bay Area. The Niners would obviously rather avoid going through that, and they're reportedly trying to restructure his contract.
Considering that, GM John Lynch let the fans know they will do everything in their power to ensure Williams is there for at least another season.
"Here’s what I know: Trent loves being a Niner," Lynch said (h/t 49ers Webzone). "We love having Trent as a Niner. And it’s up to us to figure that out, and to thread that needle. There’s some unique circumstances in that we all know what Trent is as a player, how great of a player he’s been. He’s gonna be 38 years old, and so, there’s some things that go into that, but I think we’re all on the same page, and I feel very positive about where that’s going."
Williams has struggled with injuries in the past, but he played and started in 16 games last season. Even at his age, Pro Football Focus' grading system had him as the third-best offensive tackle in the game last season, posting the second-highest run-block grade (92.8).
The 49ers have $41 million in available cap space, according to Over the Cap, and restructuring his contract would free up an additional $15.75 million. Whether they'll be able to sort things out, however, remains to be seen.
