49ers have interest in re-signing Brian Robinson Jr.

Running back Brian Robinson Jr. spent just one season with the San Francisco 49ers, playing 17 percent of the offensive snaps while serving as the primary backup to Christian McCaffrey.

Given that limited role, it would be understandable if Robinson explored opportunities elsewhere in NFL free agency. Before joining San Francisco, Robinson logged at least 50 percent of the offensive snaps in each of his final two seasons with the Washington Commanders.

From the 49ers' perspective, it might also seem logical to pursue a less expensive backup option behind McCaffrey after trading for Robinson last offseason. Robinson is scheduled to become a free agent on Wednesday, and Spotrac projects his market value at approximately $3.1 million per year.

The 49ers' biggest move so far this offseason has been agreeing to terms with veteran wide receiver Mike Evans, the longtime standout from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on a three-year deal.

While some of San Francisco's pending free agents — including wide receiver Jauan Jennings — are expected to depart, the team may take a patient approach with Robinson to see how his market develops.

According to Matt Barrows and Vic Tafur of The Athletic, the 49ers have not ruled out the possibility of bringing Robinson back for the 2026 season.

"Their own prominent free agents — Jennings, running back Brian Robinson, and guard Spencer Burford — also remain on the market," Barrows and Tafur wrote. "It's hard to imagine Jennings returning after the addition of Evans, but the 49ers have interest in bringing back Robinson."

If Robinson ultimately departs in free agency, the 49ers could pursue another veteran running back or use one of their seven selections in the 2026 NFL Draft to address the position.

San Francisco also has young depth on the roster with second-year back Jordan James and third-year running back Isaac Guerendo.
