49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo doesn't practice, but calf is getting 'better'

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan surprised some on Monday when he suggested quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could be recovered enough from the calf contusion he suffered in the Week 4 loss to the Seattle Seahawks to play in this Sunday's matchup at the unbeaten Arizona Cardinals.

Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Shanahan confirmed Garoppolo isn't practicing Wednesday but added his QB1 is "better today" as he recovers from his latest setback.

"Not enough, though, to let him go, but also not enough to rule him out," Shanahan continued. "Doctors still say give him another day. He’s got a chance. So we’re still holding out for that."

Rookie and third overall draft pick Trey Lance replaced the injured Garoppolo against Seattle and completed nine of 18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns with 41 rushing yards on seven carries. Lance, next up on the depth chart, is taking first-team practice reps while Garoppolo is sidelined.

San Francisco has an off week after the Arizona game and, thus, could sit Garoppolo and hope he gets right for the contest against the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 24. Of course, it's possible Garoppolo could lose his job because of an injury like what occurred with Andy Dalton of the Chicago Bears.
