49ers' John Lynch addresses Mac Jones trade speculation

The November 10 NFL trade deadline is fast approaching, and with several quarterback injuries around the league, speculation is growing about the future of San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Mac Jones.

The 49ers have an intriguing bargaining chip in Jones, but understandably, general manager John Lynch sounds reluctant to part with Brock Purdy's backup.

Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Thursday morning and was asked whether the 49ers have received calls about Jones. His response offered some insight into the team's thinking.

"You get calls on a variety of things," Lynch said. "I think, as I've told you guys, people aren't doing their jobs unless they're making calls. We're very comfortable with Mac. He makes our team better. Brock is our guy, but we've also seen what Mac can do if called upon."

Lynch didn't dismiss the possibility of trading Jones, but it sounds like another team would have to make a compelling offer to pry the quarterback away from San Francisco.

"We'd have to be really motivated to move Mac," Lynch said. "Kind of a situation where it makes too much sense in terms of what we had and what we were able to receive for that. But we're very comfortable with keeping Mac.

"He's just a fun guy to be around. The energy he brings to our team, it's awesome. And not a bad position to have strength in numbers, strength in quality, and we know we have that."

For now, the 49ers appear content to keep Jones in San Francisco as valuable insurance behind Purdy. Unless another team makes an offer Lynch can't refuse, Jones is likely to remain with the 49ers beyond the November 10 trade deadline.
