49ers' John Lynch explains trade philosophy amid roster injuries

The San Francisco 49ers are frequently linked to potential trades, particularly during an injury-plagued season like 2026. However, several injured players are expected to return later in the year, potentially providing a significant boost to a team that remains undefeated through six games.

With the 49ers emerging as legitimate Super Bowl contenders, general manager John Lynch faces a delicate balancing act. How does he strengthen the roster for the second half of the season and the playoffs while accounting for the reinforcements expected to return from injury?

"You look at the collective, and where can we make our football team better, not only for now, but into the future," Lynch said Thursday morning on Bay Area radio station KNBR. "I mean, you look at a guy like [DE] Keion White, it wasn't a very heralded move when we made it, but our scouts did a tremendous job on [unearthing him]. 'J.L., here's why this guy can help us. He can rush outside. He can rush inside. We think he's got untapped potential that, in our scheme, will pay off.'

"And our scheme has changed a little bit, but Keion's the type of player that can adjust to multiple schemes, and his versatility allows him to really flourish.

"So, that's really what you want in a trade-deadline acquisition. You want someone to be impactful, and hopefully for a while. We've seen it from other guys, too, and that's what we'll continue to do—assess our own team and then, hey, is there anything out there?"

Lynch also acknowledged that finding a suitable trade partner can be challenging. Teams must be willing to part with their players, and with just six weeks of NFL action in the books, even those struggling to win games may believe they can turn their seasons around. That can make them reluctant to trade away talent.

"You look at the NFC East, nobody in that division has won a game in two weeks, so they all feel like they're in it," Lynch said. "Then they're not going to be as likely to want to trade. There's so many factors. You've got to continue to do your work, do your due diligence, continue to focus on your own team—that's most important.

"But our job's to scour the league to see if there's something that can help us, and then, like I said, there's so many factors that go into being able to bring something to fruition that works for everyone. But we'll work our tails off to do that right down to the bitter end."
