The San Francisco 49ers know how crucial it is to have a reliable backup quarterback.
Even their current starter was a third-stringer at one point, so they've made the QB2 spot a bit of a premium position on their roster. That's why it's no surprise to hear they have no intention of moving on from Mac Jones. According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Jones isn't among some of the several signal-callers who might have a new home by the end of the 2026 NFL Draft.
"One quarterback not expected to go anywhere is San Francisco's Mac Jones, whose market never heated up this offseason," Schefter wrote. "Asked at last month's owners meetings why he thought there had not been a more robust market for Jones, Browns coach Todd Monken told reporters he could not comment because the 49ers quarterback is under contract and any comment could be construed as tampering."
Jones filled in for Brock Purdy for a stretch of the 2025 season, and he played well enough to not only draw league-wide attention but also raise the debate of whether he should be the starter. Of course, the 49ers aren't going to decommit from Purdy after making such a big investment in him, but that doesn't mean they should just move on from their premium backup.
Jones completed 69.6 percent of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in 11 games (eight starts) last season. He's in the final year of his contract, and the 49ers could probably land a second-round selection for his services. That said, they will rather be safe than sorry and hold onto him, even though they hope Purdy will be healthy enough to suit up.
