Quarterback Brock Purdy enters the 2025 NFL season determined to bounce back after the San Francisco 49ers' disappointing 6-11 finish in 2024. With a revamped roster and a fresh outlook—along with a nice payday—Purdy is focused on delivering a breakout campaign and guiding the team back into playoff contention.
Despite his success since entering the league, Purdy still faces his share of critics. The 49ers, however, have no doubts about their signal-caller's potential. The organization's massive financial commitment underscores its belief in his ability to deliver.
Even with the team's backing, Purdy admits there's room for growth. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he shared his key focus areas this offseason as he looks to refine his game and quiet his doubters.
"Honestly, just continue to work on my mobility and stuff," Purdy said. "I feel like I'm somewhat more of a stiff quarterback. That's not a bad thing, but something that I always try to work on is just my arm and mobility with that, and keeping it stretched out and stuff.
"But outside of that, it's more so making sure I'm on top of my mechanics when throwing to the sideline, deep ball, some running things, and making sure I'm in shape with my legs. Those are all little things that I just try to hone in on."
Purdy isn't coming off a poor individual performance but rather a season hampered by injuries across the roster. In 2023, he set a franchise record with 4,280 passing yards and threw 31 touchdowns, but those numbers dipped in 2024, when he posted 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns as the team struggled to stay healthy.
As for Purdy's self-assessment as a "stiff quarterback," one reporter asked him to elaborate on what he meant by it.
"Just mobility-wise—my arm and stuff," Purdy responded. "I feel like I'm a compact quarterback, and so, just making sure I'm stretching and trying to—not be loose, loose or anything—but a guy who can make certain arm-angle throws and stuff like that. So, working on that."
The offseason has felt unusually long for a team accustomed to competing deep into January—and often February—during recent playoff runs. Missing the postseason has created a sense of urgency and renewed determination heading into training camp.
"We've had a long offseason, obviously, not making the playoffs, so a lot of guys are itching to get back and compete and play football," Purdy concluded.
