49ers quarterbacks are dueling in training camp

The San Francisco 49ers currently have the most interesting quarterback situation in football. With a roster loaded with talent on both sides of the line, the decision on whether to start Trey Lance or Brock Purdy could steer the direction of the season.

However, according to writers and reporters surrounding the team, both quarterbacks have shown promise in the early parts of training camp.

Lance, who was selected third overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, has yet to have the opportunity to show off his skill set at the next level. In the games he has played, Lance's ability to use his feet alongside his strong arm has excited the 49ers offensive staff with the possibility of the many different options they potentially could have with him behind center.

However, Lance has shown inconsistent play, especially with his short passing game both in games and at training camp. He has missed open receivers in the flat during camp, which is something San Francisco's offense relies on.

According to 49ers reporter David Lombardi from the Athletic on X, Monday's practice was Lance's strongest showing so far in training camp, throwing a tighter ball seemingly coming into his own as camp continues.

The question for Lance is if he can perform like this every day or is he too inconsistent to start.

"He's throwing the football a lot better. His base is better," 49ers general manager John Lynch said following Lance's performance on Monday. "His mechanics are a lot better. That's showing up out there on the field."

As for Purdy, there was concern about his return following his UCL surgery in his throwing elbow in March following his injury in the NFC Championship game back in January. The organization and fans were happy to hear he has made a full recovery and would be able to start throwing again in July.

It was more exciting when reports came out from training camp about his arm strength being back on par, including even overthrowing receivers on deep routes. He has had some accuracy problems during camp which has led to interceptions.

However, he still is getting back into football form after missing six months. Physically, Purdy looks like he hasn't skipped a beat, something the organization was worried about following how he injured his elbow.

"He's come back, he's had no arm troubles, and he's been totally healthy," coach Kyle Shanahan said, "He's getting back his timing and rhythm and I've really been impressed."

With this in mind, the 49ers will have to make a decision on what to do with their two young quarterbacks: Do they roll with the talent or do they roll with what worked?

So far in training camp, it seems like Purdy is still the favorite to start. However, if Lance can impress the coaching staff anything can happen for the former third overall pick.
