Will Grier made headlines after announcing his retirement via an Instagram post. He received well wishes from fans and some NFL players, including San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.

They were teammates with the Carolina Panthers for two seasons, during the quarterback's first two years in the league in 2019 and 2020. Grier returned to the franchise that drafted him at No. 100 in the third round, signing a deal in April. However, he caught many by surprise with his retirement decision, especially as he's only 31 years old.

McCaffrey dropped his reaction in the comments section.

"Legend man. Loved playing with you," McCaffrey wrote. "Also sickest way to retire haha '“'retired today.'"

Grier played only two games in his professional career, both during his rookie campaign. He mostly served as a backup or a third-string option.

The West Virginia Mountaineers product spent time with six NFL teams. He hung up his cleats for good, with career stats of 28 completions for 228 yards, zero touchdowns and four interceptions.

Grier's sudden retirement leaves the Panthers with Bryce Young, Kenny Pickett and Haynes King comprising their quarterback room.

Meanwhile, McCaffrey is expected to participate in the 49ers' 11 open public practice sessions scheduled between July 26 and Aug. 18.

He is coming off a strong 2025 season, in which he appeared in and started all 17 regular-season games. The veteran recorded 311 rushing attempts for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also produced through the air with 102 receptions for 924 yards and seven scores.
